How to Install a Solar Pool Heating System

You are here

Solar thermal systems for pool heating are so common and mainstream that most manufacturers provide very detailed installation instructions. It is important to follow these instructions as they outline the most efficient way to install the equipment.

Although you may be (or think you are) an accomplished DIY expert, don't ignore the documentation – it often includes many useful hints and tips gathered from years of installation experience!

Don't forget how important proper drainage is in pool heating systems: everything from the collectors to the pipes must be mounted so that all the heated pool water runs through as efficiently as possible.

Although many manufacturers supply the collectors and pipes as a kit, you may need extra parts or decide to build your own bespoke system. In these cases, you should choose black schedule-40 PVC pipes and fittings and ensure that the pipes are solid PVC, not foam-core. If you can't get black pipes, buy white instead and leave it to age in the sun for a year (or clean it with PVC joint cleaner) before you paint it black.

Secure horizontal pipe runs every five feet, vertical runs every ten feet and remember to leave the clamps loose around the pipes as they will expand and contract significantly when in use.
