Large Area and Free Lighting

Large-Area Exterior Lighting

Large outdoor spaces need more lighting. You could choose to put several million CF lamps around your yard or opt for the easier and more energy-efficient setup of using high- or low-pressure sodium lamps . These are yellowish in color, which is suitable for both security and perimeter lighting. They function very well in horse-riding arenas as well as on the streets. Comparatively, on a watt-for-watt basis, a sodium lamp gives out twice the light power of a CF lamp and is ten times more efficient than an incandescent lamp.

Free Light

You can still enjoy the best lighting that is both free and 100% energy efficient, but there may be spaces in your well-designed home that do not receive sufficient sunlight. You can consider skylights but these are not very energy-efficient and are subject to condensation problems with reframing and finishing required on the interior.

Check out the product offering from Sunpipe; it makes a great alternative. SunPipe is like a fiber-optic device running on steroids. With just a reflective supply pipe going through the roof into the living room and a trim kit, the equipment is easily installed.  Light from the outside is directed into the destination area by the SunPipe on all types of day. A simple 9-inch diameter pipe gives as much light as a 400W lamp on a sunny day.
