How to Reuse Household Items

You are here

It has become very natural for us to throw away our things without even thinking about it. Instead of throwing our things away, we can:

Repair

Repair furniture instead of dumping it into the trash. An expert craftsman can make your old furniture look like new.

Reinstate

Old chairs and sofas can be re-upholstered. Old chairs can also be re-caned.

Reactivate

Machine parts, such as an old bike chain that has become rusty, can still be usable just by soaking it in penetrating oil. It is best to oil the bike chains regularly so that they do not become rusty.

Reinvent

Create new uses for ordinary items, such as plastic bottles. You can make the plastic bottles into frames that act as a shield for plants from the attack of slugs.

Donate

Donate things, which you no longer use, to flea markets, thrift shops, playgroups, shelters and hospitals.

Proper arrangement of everything has made thrift shop displays more interesting. The clothes have proper placement on racks and hangers, while the CDs find place on shelves and not just jammed in an old box on the floor. There are also thrift shops that specialize in selling particular items such as clothes, furniture, chinaware from the 50s and 60s, as well as fabrics for furnishing. There are also thrift shops that specialize in selling used books.

There are some cities where residents have a habit of placing their unwanted but still usable items on the sidewalk at night before the garbage truck arrives. This is great, because other people, who find a use for these things in their homes, pick them up. This practice is very popular in New York, as well as in other small towns and cities.

Sell

Instead of throwing out the things that you no longer use, you can sell them instead and earn extra cash. You can sell your items at auctions and swap meets. You can sell anything, from big items down to the smallest ones. The internet is also a great venue for selling your items.
