Range Issues with Electric Cars: Page 2 of 3

  • actually no worry about finding a filling station, and that they can use their fully charged car at anytime

Most electric car owners will be using their cars frequently during the day for short journeys. For those who regularly travel longer distances, more so than what the typical driver experiences - such as a significantly farther distance between home and office - a charging point that is available at either destination would be ideal. Hence, the range of an electric car can be doubled if the car is charged each time the driver arrivers at his or her destination.

Then again, there are those who regularly drive longer distances to various places, for whatever personal or professional reasons they find necessary. These drivers would fare better with a hybrid car, one that is powered by both electric and fossil fuel, or should consider a higher-end electric car that is designed to provide for an extended range.

For those who travel long distances only occasionally, such as once a month or less, other options maybe considered. Government and car manufacturers are working together to provide plausible options for those who occasionally travel longer distances.

Many countries have set up a charging point network to prevent any inconvenience that might be experienced by drivers of electric cars. These are provided by the respective governments and the electric car industry, as well as by electric car enthusiast groups:

  • Charging points for electric cars are now available at the roadsides or at car parks in many cities, like Paris and London, with thousands more to be installed  in the coming years
  • There are companies that are hard at work developing a fast charge network that allows drivers to recharge in only 30-45 minutes
  • Charging points for electric cars are currently available at certain shopping malls that have priority parking
  • Electric car enthusiasts in the United Kingdom manage the charging point network, making it  the world’s most widely available and efficient charging network
  • Local businesses, like malls, bars and restaurants, are being approached by developers and owners of electric cars to offer charging points for patrons who drive electric cars
  • Many owners of electric cars are also negotiating with their places of employment to make charging facilities available at the work place

Better Place, a Renault and Nissan-backed company, is currently setting up an infrastructure of stations to allow for battery swapping. This business plan allows Better Place-equipped electric car owners the ability to swap their flat batteries for fully charged batteries in just three minutes.

REVA, another well known manufacturer of electric cars, has built an interface into their electric cars to allow for efficient tracking of charging status from the owner’s mobile phone:

  • The parked electric car can notify the owner of its full charge as soon as it is ready
  • If the electric car owner finds the batteries to be low, a text message can be sent to the car manufacturer. The manufacturer can, in turn, check the car’s battery remotely and unlock the electric car’s virtual reserve tank, giving the car
