Servicing your Electric Car

A used electric car may not offer you the same service privileges as that of a new car, especially if you are purchasing it from a private seller.

Check out the possible service facilities available from the car’s manufacturer or importer and locate one that is nearest to your residence. Alternatively, you can make arrangements to engage the services of an electric car specialist that will come to your home to provide maintenance.

Some car owners may assume that they can get service from mainstream car manufacturers like Citroen, Ford, Toyota or Peugeot if they purchase the electric car from them or their local dealer, but that may not be so. Many of the older electric cars, especially those manufactured in the 1990s, are not supported by mainstream dealers. It is wise, therefore, to get maintenance information from your local dealer before you commit to a purchase.

Otherwise, discuss possible maintenance plans with a servicing company for fork lift trucks. Many are glad to service the electrical aspects of any electric car, while your local garage can service the other, more conventional parts, like the brakes, suspension and steering.

As a last resort, you can maintain your electric car personally. If this is your choice, find your local (or closest) electric car owners club that is geared specifically to your car model. You can consult with members of the Electric Auto Association or the Battery Vehicle Society for more service tips and recommendations.
