Thermosiphon Solar Thermal System Layout

A typical layout schematic for a thermosiphon solar thermal systemThe least popular of the solar hot water installations, thermosiphon setups have an odd layout that is unsuitable for most homes. They require a storage tank that is above the level of the collectors and, in the case of direct thermosiphon systems, need the tank to be installed somewhere relatively warm to avoid freezing problems.

Despite this shortcoming, they are still a possible choice, especially if roof-mounting an array is not possible. They do not use pumps, which makes them easier to maintain than more complex systems, and are relatively simple to install.

The diagram shows the more complex indirect thermosiphon solar thermal setup with an external heat exchanger: a direct system does not have a separate solar loop.
