Solar Swimming Pool and Air Collector Maintenance

You are here

Solar swimming pool systems are among the simplest available. Maintenance is equally simple and is carried out at the start of the warm season, before the system is used.

  • Check that the controller works properly.
  • Inspect the collectors and piping for abrasions and other damage.
  • Verify all the fittings to make sure they're solidly connected.
  • Clean debris from around the collectors.

Once you have checked those things, turn the system on and check there are no leaks. Then switch it off again and make sure all the water drains out properly.

Air collectors

Air-based solar thermal systems are relatively simple, compared to most building-sized installations. Their one weak point is the dampers – even the highest-quality, most expensive dampers have a fairly short life.

At the start of the heating season:

  • Check all the dampers and lubricate them.
  • Check and lubricate the blower.
  • Check the air filter in the cold air duct for dust accumulation. In very dusty environments, you should check the filter regularly throughout the heating season. Media filters with lots of surface area work best.

You can also check the absorber plates in the collectors themselves for dust accumulation if you suspect the filter has not been working properly. Accumulated dust will impede heat transfer.
