As a rule of thumb (which is by no means definitive), most residential installations use flat plate collectors because they're smaller for a similar amount of absorber area, and the limiting factor is almost always available space. If you're lucky enough to have a lot of open ground (or roof space or whatever) to use for your collectors, you may end up with a different option.
