  • Consider purchasing appliances which do not have electronic clocks or "instant-on" features. These create phantom loads which consume a lot of power with no real benefit.
  • Electronic items that require batteries to be recharged, such as cell phones, MP3 devices and PDAs, should use a power bar which can be turned off as soon as charging is complete.
  • Use more high-efficiency compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) for your lighting needs (see below).
  • Opt for high-efficiency, front-loading washing machines, like Miele or Bosch machines which require only one ounce of detergent for every load, not to mention a fraction of the water usage. This means less electrical energy needed for operation, less water used in every cycle, and less energy required for heating smaller amounts of wash water.
