Scour your trashcan for all the materials that can be composted or recycled, so that very little goes in the landfills. Do not use plastic boxes as storage for tools, toys and knick-knacks. Send it for recycling instead. Call the local authorities for additional information on the curbside program in your area or you can check the information on the internet.

-       Do not use excessive packaging. The products that you buy do not have to be individually- wrapped. It is best if the packaging or the product itself is from recycled material.

-       Bring your own shopping bag when you go shopping. Always bring a reusable plastic bag with you.

-       Before you clean out your attic or garage, call the local authorities or the recycling center to ask if there are items that they can recycle or reuse. Refer to the section on Bulky Waste or the corresponding section for each item.

-       Buy items that last longer, use less energy or those that are rechargeable or solar-powered.

-       Do not burn your trash.

-       Use a low-energy light bulb.

-       Practice reducing waste in your workplace as well. Collect used paper for reusing in the photocopier. Inform the management on the advantages of recycling in your office. Use recycled paper as much as possible.

-       Purchase recycled products such as kitchen rolls, toilet paper, writing paper, tissues or envelopes. Use recycled paper for your printer.

-       Avoid using disposable plates, cups and cutlery. Use reusable ones instead.

-       Always ask for recycled products that are available in your local market. Commend the management of the store whenever they add more items to their range of recycled products.

-       Patronize thrift stores.

-       Inform as many people as you can on the 3Rs ( reduce, reuse, recycle)
